Firmness: Firmness is determined differently for different types of Mattresses. For an Innerspring one, the number of coils inside will determine the firmness. Firm innersprings have 312 coils, extra firm 522 coils and super firm 1000 coils that are suitable for thin to average and heavy to extra heavy people, respectively.

The firmness of a Latex mattress depends on the Initial Load Deflection, or density. A medium firmness latex has average ILD of 25, firm 31 and extra firm mattress 35. Extra firm latex Mattresses are most suitable for people who like hard beds and have high body density.

Types: Innerspring, Latex, Memory Foam and Waterbed are the four main types of them.

Innersprings have an inner layer of coils, which is covered with upholstery and is designed to support the body or 'lift' it up. A latex mattress also has coils and a core of latex foam that takes the shape of the body relieving pressure, and providing comfort. Memory foams or Visco elastics are created entirely of foam that moulds itself to the body, allows you to sink in, absorbs movement and supports the spinal cord. Waterbeds have alternating layers of water and air that control movement and help reduce backaches.

Personal Preference: Ones you buy will ultimately depend on your personal choice. Maybe you want a hard bed to reduce back pain or a soft bed that you can sink in. Whatever you choose, buy quality stuff. Your aim should be to buy a best-value mattress and not an expensive or inexpensive one.

The choice for using an irregular bed frame may mean most regular mattresses are too small or large for your bed frame and can leave gaps or over hangs.

If your mattress isn't seated properly it can make lying on it akin to being on top of a plate of jelly and hard to sleep on. Buying the right mattress for your bespoke frame could mean you have a limited range or have to pay for the privilege of having a custom sized mattress. When choosing somewhere to sleep make sure you choose the right one for your needs and consider how easily it will be to replace your mattress, especially if you end up choosing an irregular sized bed.
