There are essentially two main types of mattress construction, the mattress with springs and those without springs.
The majority of mattresses used in the UK have some form of spring construction. They can vary considerably depending on the thickness of the spring wire, the number of coils in the spring, the height of the spring, its tension, and if they are independent from each other.
Single Bed Mattress
Each of these factors will determine the quality of the mattress, its firmness and the weight distribution properties of each mattress.
Some spring interior mattresses can have various tensions of springs in different parts of the mattress. The advantage of this is that you can have extra support where the heavier parts of your body will rest, such as the hips and shoulders. Also it can be important to have extra strong springs around the edge of the mattress to give it extra rigidity.
Different tensions are usually available in most mattress styles to meet the requirements of the individual.
The three main types of spring interior mattresses are open spring, continuous spring and pocket spring.
The open spring is very widely used and has the springs arranged in rows and connected to each other at the tops and bottom by a spinal helical wire with an outer rod giving extra strength to the mattress perimeter.
There are about 300 coils for every five foot of mattress and available in various thickness of spring wire to give different tensions. This combination is usually found in the budget range of mattresses.
The continuous spring unit is made from a single continuous length of wire made into a series of interwoven springs which usually run the length of the mattress. These springs are linked vertically rather than horizontally. The gauge of the wire used in this type of mattress is generally narrower and the springs themselves are slightly smaller than the open spring mattress. There are more springs per square foot in this type of mattress than the open spring and therefore these mattresses are usually found in the mid range.
Pocket spring mattresses have been developed by enclosing each individual spring in a fabric pocket allowing them to work independently of each other. This allows the mattress to mould itself to the individuals body and help to prevent pressure points. Another advantage is that there is no transmission of movement from one part of the bed and sleeping partner to another partner on the other side of the bed. The number of springs is generally much higher than other types of spring mattresses and can in some case, be well over one thousand springs. There are now some mattresses that have two levels of springs with the normal size spring beneath a series of smaller springs on top. This will give a much more comfortable bed. This type of mattresses is generally more expensive than other types and will appear at the high end of the market.
