The King Size Mattress - Do You Really Need to Buy One?

Many first time mattress buyers make the mistake of choosing one that is too small for the bed. This is usually because they haven't measured the dimensions of the bed beforehand. There is a lot of confusion regarding mattress sizes as well. If you find it difficult to make a choice regarding the size you need, here are some handy tips to help you out. You can take your pick from a king size, queen size or full size mattress.

King Size Mattresses

Single Bed Mattress

The king size beds usually have dimensions of 80 by 76 inches. They are far bigger than queen size ones. These have a lot of personal space for couples and can be compared to two twin beds pushed together. The bed is ideal for families with children and pets, as there is space to spare on this one.

There might be a slight space problem if your room is not big enough. You can try and cut the king size mattress to manageable size but using a split foundation. It is quite cumbersome to lug around the house and up staircases. On the west coast, you can look for a shorter but wider version called the "California King" which has dimensions of 84 by 72 inches.

Queen Mattresses

The queen beds are smaller than king size but larger than the full size variety. They measure 80 by 60 inches. They are 80 inches in length and 60 inches in width. The increased size gives them a distinct edge over full size models when it comes to comfort. This size is especially popular as a first time buy among couples. The size is also great if your room is not very spacious. The mattress is a good idea for guest rooms which are typically smaller than the other bed rooms. You can also put it in an accessory master bedroom. If you tend to sprawl, this is a great choice for single sleepers as well.

Double Mattresses

These are full beds that measure 53 inches in width and 75 inches in length. They give much less space as compared to the king bed. They are about 15 inches wider than the regular twin size beds in the market. These may not be ideal for tall persons. The full size variety is better for single sleepers who aren't very tall. You can save on money and constant changes in your children's room if you choose a full size over twin size mattresses.
